Julie and Kate decided that they would fill the gap. They decided to write books based on themes pertinent to autism, but that would appeal to all children. Julie and Kate believe that special needs themes are not strictly for special needs children. They believe all kids have needs unique to their own experiences and circumstances. JuKa writes for everyone.
Kate wanted a book that would encourage children with autism to engage in the outside world. Seemingly content in a private inner realm, autistic children often avoid external interaction. Julie set out to bring Kate’s wishes to life, and along came Howard.
Although written with autism in mind, Howard appeals to all. Howard could be described as shy, egocentric, adventuresome, obsessive-compulsive, fun, isolated, brave, careful, curious, friendly, anti-social, or just plain cute. You can describe Howard however you want, but he is definitely a fish. |
